Navy Seals freed Captain Richard Phillips on Easter Sunday. Three pirates killed. On Pirate captured and probably read his Miranda Rights.
The head of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command is warning that the successful rescue of an American captain held by Somali pirates could escalate violence in that part of the world.
Obama twice approved force to rescue hostage
There’s absolutely no way of knowing if an Academic like Obama understands “Use of Force” in the practical sense, but it was absolutely the right call. The fact that rescuing Americans on International waters has to be approved by the President is weird to me. We have Americans being held in North Korea right now who will most likely rot and die there. But, faced with a life raft commandered by four stick men with guns, President Obama passed the first bunny test.
Perhaps it had to take as long as it did. Maybe we needed more than one battle ship to face down the awesome menace of a lifeboat, out of gas, with four pissed off pirates. Maybe it takes five days to wear down such menacing odds to a manageable threat. Or. Maybe it takes a week to debate all possible outcomes, assess the gravity of the situation, allow the press plenty of time to cover the drama sufficiently, before allowing the Seals to take these idiots out.
I just have one question and I don’t want to take away from the awesomeness of this outcome. WTH is Obama going to do when he’s faced with a real threat? Is he going to play the scene out for the press to show himself in the best possible light? Is he going to negotiate with the country that attacks as the missiles are in the air? Or is he ready to make real decisions now in a 60 second turn around? I’m just asking.
Let’s just hope he doesn’t give a speech lamenting the unecessary loss of life in this incident and appologize to the Somalis.
Small favors, man. I’ll take them.

I’ve been wondering the same thing. I’ve got a commenter on my blog who is all celebratory that Obama saved the day. WTF? As I see it, the SEALS were just doing their job – not to take away from their heroics at all, but to be clear, I don’t think Obama did anything but give them permission to do what they were trained to do.
The next question as I see it is what is he going to do about Roxana Saberi, who could be facing a death sentence, Robert Levinson, or the Americans held in North Korea?
Sucks to be cynical, doesn’t it?
Let’s hope President Obama is as baffling to our enemies as he is to us when it comes to matters of defense.
Those F-22′s sure were sweet birds.
Bride,
yes the cancellation of the F-22′s comes right in when Russia is producing their new generation super fighter the SU-35. This is looking like a repaly of tyhe 1930′s when the Western democracies thought that by disarming they would have been able to placate the totalitarian tyrants bent on doing away with them. Amazing how history repeats itself.
