OK. I’ll admit it. I love stories like this one. I shall set aside my usual doom and gloom today even though on Wednesday the Fed set us up to collapse when they monetized the debt to the tune of one trillion dollars which – I believe – is the beginnning of the end of the US as we have known it.

Michelle is planting a kitchen garden on the South Lawn.

White House to break ground on ‘kitchen garden’ By DARLENE SUPERVILLE, Associated Press Writer Darlene Superville, Associated Press Writer – Thu Mar 19, 7:33 pm ET

WASHINGTON – The White House is getting a new garden.

First lady Michelle Obama is scheduled to break ground Friday on a new garden near the fountain on the South Lawn that will supply the White House kitchen.

She will be joined by students from Bancroft Elementary School in the District of Columbia. The children will stay involved with the project, including planting the fruits, vegetables and herbs in the coming weeks and harvesting the crops later in the year.

I think that’s awesome. Everyone needs to plant a back yard garden for the coming age of starvation we are all facing.

Maybe Michelle’s been reading our blogs?

Doubtful. How can you not love a garden, though? I had the best herb garden when we lived in Tucson. Olive trees, Bay Tree, Tomatoes, Basil everywhere. It smelled so good when I watered the Rosemary.

    Now?

I have orchids. They are easier but not as great as a kitchen garden. When the back deck is done the back yard is getting tilled under and I am putting in a proper kitchen garden.

Really suprised to see Ms Obama start an old-school garden that wastes water, offers poor yields, promotes topsoil erosion, and reduces oxygen producing grass.

Its a shame that they didn’t read on modern gardening and install a nice square-foot garden. A square-foot garden uses 20% of the space and 10% of the water of a traditional garden, but with 100% of the yield. Not to mention they look far nicer.

Its much easier to convince Americans to install a 3- or 4-foot box of food than the monstrosity they’re building in the South Lawn. Especially since theres no digging or tilling involved.

Oh hey! Never thought of that. Hmmmm. You would think she has the best minds in ag on it wouldn’t you?

Better Homes and Gardens sucked me in at the grocery store today with a garden issue and it cost $6.99. Yeesh. “Grow your own food” advice is getting pricey. I may resubscribe to Organic Gardening but last time that led to chickens.
